Blogging is a good way to promote literacy amongst younger children. In Moodle, each user, teacher or student, has their own blog attached to their profile. Blogs in Moodle 1.9 aren’t so great, because they don’t allow feedback and nor can they be attached to courses – so any blog a child does is carried around with them from subject to subject. However, in Moodle 2, it’s now possible to comment on blog posts and – to a limited degree -filter them in courses. So our Year 6 child could blog about an English story they’ve read and link it to their English course and then blog about a History project and link it to their History course. Blogs are still attached to an individual though, so the system isn’t perfect, but if you are moving to or starting with Moodle 2, do go and check out the blogs.
Gill Stables from Blessed Sacrament RC Primary School Preston talks below about blogging in Moodle 2, and also points out a couple of other features she feels will benefit primary schools: the ability for pupils to “tick off” work completed ( using “activity completion”) and the ability for teachers – keen to keep the reins on their young charges! -to control when resources are accessed (using “conditional activities”)
