That’s a quote from one of the Teaching Assistants who attended Mary Tuson’s course Supporting the Mathematics Departmenthere at OurLearning last Friday.
A Head of Mathematics, Expert Subject Leader and former LA Maths Consultant, Mary gave delegates from all over the North West a wide range of strategies and resources – paper, card and electronic – to give them confidence to help students learning Maths. “She’s very knowledgeable and friendly”, said another delegate; “the atmosphere was really relaxed”
The end of the one-day session wasn’t the end of their training however; all attendees got a personal login to a dedicated Maths TA course on a Moodle site to continue sharing ideas and materials.
Bearing in mind how many adults struggle with numbers in their own childhood, and then have to come to terms with changes in teaching Maths later on, perhaps our final comment is the most apt: “It was informative -but without being threatening!!”
